So after the torrential rains and the 23 tornadoes (yes Virginie, TWENTY-THREE tornadoes – see article below) that hit the DFW metroplex on April 3rd — we went out to our aquaponic system to find….

That all the plants were actually still there and doing fine. Yeah sure the beets had fallen over a bit and one of the cucumbers had been blown off the trellis, but all in all – there was no real damage. In light of this good fortune, we decided that it was high time to have the first “official” harvest from this system. Considering that the majority of the plant have been growing in their current locations for less than one month – I personally believe that this is a milestone.

So just to make everyone jealous (sorry, but you would have too, right?), but here is our salad from last night. We harvested Lettuce, Bok Choy, Swiss Chard, Beet Leaves, Kale from the aquaponics beds, and the soil garden added some fresh Pineapple Sage and Sweet Genovese Basi. These fresh harvests were all combined in a bowl with some goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and some fresh market strawberries (ours were eaten by birds…). Lightly drizzled with a little balsamic vinegar and voila —




I think that we will have to keep a record of all of these quick harvest meals, maybe we can put together a series of healthy recipes to go with our Aquaponic systems.
