Since her initial episode launched on Earth Day this year, she has managed to speak with the finest people in the field of Aquaponics, and ask them about why they do what they do and what they would like to share with the rest of us trying to…

Build a 2000 sq.ft. Greenhouse Frame for LESS THAN $700!!!!!!

*** EDIT: Just an FYI — we used an old price sheet when we first totaled up the prices. The actual material cost is a little under $700, not $400. Even though the cost is more than we originally said — this is still a great price for a large greenhouse structure. We are very sorry for all of the confusion that this error on our part has caused.***   How would you like to learn how to build your own Greenhouse? What…

New Class Schedule for 2015

Welcome to the New Year! Green Phoenix Farms have been thinking lately about how many people we have met over the last 5 years and the amazing things that we have seen with Aquaponics. Though our schedule has been crazy with projects, we have been working hard to make sure that we have planned some time to make sure that all of our community members out there have access to the information that they need. To that end, we have…

My Seed Saving Adventure Has Begun.

So I am new at this whole concept. I will be honest, I have been a “lazy man’s gardener” for the past six years – meaning I have mostly bought pre-started seedlings from the local nurseries. Though, about three years ago, I started going to the Farmer’s Market to buy some special starts called “Heirlooms.” (I know, that is crazy, huh?) From there, the whole thing just snowballed. I got sent a catalog from Baker Creek Seeds, and in those wonderful…

Repurposed Materials for Urban Growing

There are so many great resources out there for individuals who want to start growing things these days. A tour through the gardening section at any major bookstore will yield a large number of books devoted entirely to this practice. You can find traditional gardening, and lately, you can find container gardens and permaculture books galore. In the Urban environment, it is often very hard to find the SPACE to actually grow things… In my experience, most people would like…

“Sunrose” System Growth Update (March 26th)

Time for another growth update to the current happenings in the “Sunrose” system! Our newly remodeled system is working like a champ and we have not had a single problem with the revised auto-siphons and the new drain line. Even though there is a surplus of nutrients in the system from the Tilapia we raised last year, we decided to add  some small feeder goldfish into the IBC tank about 4 days ago. Mainly we just wanted to have something…

Smart Gardener — free web-app

So I was doing a little surfing on the web the other day and I ran across this nifty little app. While it is built for traditional soil gardening (in-ground, raised and container beds), I do think that a creative person could use this to keep track of an aquaponic system. In their own words, “Smart Gardener combines your selected plants, garden layout, and household size with complex planting variables, to create a Smart Garden Plan just for you. With…

Hello world!!!

Welcome to the world of Green Phoenix Farms. We are a small farm located just outside of Dallas, Texas and we focus our production in the realm of organic aquaponics. This is to say that we raise fish and then use various natural biological processes to transform the fish waste into fertilizer that is then used to grow great varieties of organic crops. We are looking to expand into other areas of organic production, including permaculture, bio-composting and raising poultry.…
